Although the word "truth" is a familiar part of our vocabulary, the question "What is truth?" seems to belong to the realm of the abstract. The word turns up over and over again in our lives—didn't our parents instruct us to "tell the truth?" When we enter school, we look for a "true friend", and later on, we look for "true love", hoping that this entrusted person will "be true." Yet the question "What is truth?" prompts us to imagine academic discussions or reminds us of the soul-searching of restless youth. It intimidates us.
Nevertheless, this is a question rooted deeply in the minds of all human beings. Whether we consciously form the question or not, we all seek truth in our lives. We experience a yearning that gnaws at us, yet is so indistinct we can barely voice it. We aren't certain what we are looking for. Is it a quality? A doctrine? A philosophy? None of these offers an answer, but that does not mean truth does not exist. On the contrary, truth exists and is very real. Truth is the Person of Jesus Christ. While on earth, He declared that He was truth; as God, He lived a life that was the embodiment of truth. Moreover, we can receive Christ as truth. When He fills us with His life, we are enabled to live a life void of hypocrisy, a life of truth.
We hope this issue of Generation will redirect the search of many; truth is not to be found in a thing, but in a Person.
